Each month, Vimeo has an average of 65 million unique visitors. Its registered users are over 8 million. Fifteen per cent of the website’s traffic is coming from mobile devices. Vimeo accounts for 0.11% of the total internet bandwidth, after Youtube and Facebook.
Most of the members of Vimeo’s community, which are called “Vimeans”, are independent filmmakers including their fans. A Vimean is one who actively engages with fellow Vimeans on a regular basis.
Vimeo is popular to budding entertainers. It is the more preferred website in hosting content. For instance, pop star Britney Spears used Vimeo to launch her premier for the music video of her single entitled Radar in 2009. At one time, the White House also used Vimeo to post its high-def broadcasts.
In October 2007, Vimeo became the first video sharing platform to support high-def playback. Once uploaded, HD videos are automatically converted to 720/30p VP6 flash videos. In August 2010, Vimeo started encoding all uploaded videos into H.264 to make them ready for HTML5 support.
Since October 2008, Vimeo users can upload up to 5 GB per week, with unlimited HD videos, create unlimited number of channels, albums and groups, HD embeds, no advertisements, create high quality videos through 2-pass video re-encoding, priority encoding, and more through the “Vimeo Plus” package. The package is offered at $60 per year.
In February 2010, Vimeo allowed Plus users to re-encode all uploaded 1080p videos to 1080p or 720p. Unlimited HD embeds also followed.
