In June 1987, the semiconductors companies Microelettronica of Italy and Thomson Semiconducteurs of France merged to form a new company named SGS-THOMSON. In May 1998, the merger officially adopted a new name, STMicroelectronics.
With 12 factories and a number of sales points around the world, STMicroelectronics has sustained its worldwide reach. Its reach was further sealed when the company went public in 1994. Its shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange, Borsa Italiana and Euronext Paris.
STMicroelectronics is a one of the industry’s leaders in innovation with 11,000 research and development personnel and close to 16,000 patents comprised of 9,000 patent families and 515 pending patent applications. Its research and development facilities are located in 10 countries.
Providing its customers with independent, safe, and cost-effective manufacturing machines, STMicroelectronics has established a network of both front end and back end manufacturing plants. For instance, STMicroelectronics front end manufacturing facilities do the water fabrication while its back end manufacturing plants take care of the assembling, testing and packaging.
Since its founding in 1987, STMicroelectronics has constantly formed alliances and partnerships with its suppliers, competitors, customers, research institutes and colleges and universities worldwide. Among its active partnerships in the process technology is the International Semiconductor Development Alliance (ISDA). STMicroelectronics is also a constituent of the European advanced technologies research programs ENIAC and CATRENE.
