From its initial focus on baseball, Stats slowly expanded to include other leagues such as the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), the National Football League (NFL), and the National Hockey League (NHL). In 2000, Fox Sports brought in Stats for its game analyses. At present, Stats is covered by a joint venture with Associated Press and News Corporation. Each of these companies own 50% of Stats since the company merged with AP Megasports in 2005. After the merger, Stats was known as Stats LLC.
In March 2009, Stats acquired the wire service of PA SportsTicker from the UK-based news company Press Association. Prior to Stats; purchase, PA SportsTicker was owned by ESPN and is based in New Jersey City. PA SportsTicker was moved to Bristol following the its acquisition by Press Association in 2006.
Stat is using SportVU cameras in tracking and quantifying data during the games. In the NBA for instance, each ballclub has installed a $100,000 annual system in their arenas. With this, the teams have been using more and more advanced metrics in planning their games and scouting their opponents - how the opposing team moves the ball, who the best defender is in pick-and-roll plays, and how to attack the hoop even with the opponent’s huge rim defender. Stat is accessible to the public, opening the way for fans to analyze games on their own their the behind-the-scenes statistics available online.
