The history of the company goes back to 1843, with the founding of The Stanley Works. It is a recipient of the Army-Navy “E” Award for its excellence in war production. Today, the business is headquartered in New Britain, Connecticut. There are three primary divisions of the company: Industrial, Security and Construction and Do It Yourself (CDIY). These business units have several sub-divisions. Under their CDIY are the Professional Power Tools, Consumer Products, Hand Tools & Storage, and Fastening and Accessories. The Engineered Fastening, Industrial and Automotive Repair (IAR) and Infrastructure are the sub-divisions of Infrastructure. The two sub-divisions of their Security segment are the Mechanical Access Solutions and Convergent Security Solutions (CSS).
There are several brand names that the company has divested as it moved forward to becoming a global business. The three sub-divisions divested were Tools, Air Compressors and Pressure Washers and their Hardware and Home Improvement (HHI) sub-divisions. The majority of these businesses was sold to Spectrum Brands in 2012.
Stanley Black & Decker’s global expansion is mainly attributed to the strategic acquisitions it has made through the years. Its first international takeover was made in 1937 in Sheffield, England with the acquisition of J.A. Chapman. This marked the entry of the business in the UK market. Year after year, the company has made several acquisitions that pushed its growth and presence in the global markets.
The company today stands for innovation, hard work and a benchmark of the world’s most powerful tools that partner with professionals around the world.
