Sanergy is building its affordable and sustainable hygienic system out of the entire sanitation chain. Sanergy is implementing a vertically integrated waste management system. This has four parts.
1. Sanergy will build a network of low-cost sanitation centers within the slum areas.
2. The centers are distributed to local entrepreneur through franchising.
3. Wastes produced are collected.
4. Wastes collected under a process of conversion to fertilizer or electricity.
In each of these steps, Sanergy is creating job opportunities while addressing the issues of sanitation and hygiene at the same time among the settlers in the slum areas.
This Kenya project is already the second of its kind implemented by Sanergy. Like its first IAP project, this present project has primary focus on user-interface development. Whenever clean, comfortable and private toilets are provided, an increased adoption of hygienic practices usually follows.
In its first IAP project, Sanergy discovered that a product design that was developed as a result of the interaction with its end users is arguably the most effective way to develop products. Normally, products developed in this way go beyond just meeting the basic needs. It transcends beyond a greater need and more people are blessed through it.
So in this second grant, Sanergy is expanding its accessibility to other segments, especially in key customer groups where its products do not address specific issues. These segments include products for the disabled and elderly, the peri-urban slums and landlord or plot household toilets. Furthermore, Sanergy is working to increase the introduction of specific urinals for men.
