At the moment, ORPC is pursuing the commercialization of three proprietary power systems: TidGen®, RiveGen® and OCGen®. Each of these power systems use ORPC’s own patented TGU or turbine generator unit. Using the TidGen® Power System, ORPC first delivered power to the federally-licensed Cobscook Bay Tidal Energy Project in 2012. TidGen® is designed for shallow and medium depth tidal sites.
TidGen® is still the only ocean energy system that delivers electricity to a power grid across the Americas without using a dam. TidGen® is also the first energy project with long term purchase agreement that uses tidal energy in the US.
The RivGen® Power System is used at rivers and estuaries. It provides energy to isolated grids that normally depends on diesel to generate electricity. Its initial project is located in the Village of Igiugig in Alaska. With this project, ORPC will demonstrate that the system is commercially viable.
The OCGen® Power System is used in offshore and deep tidal ocean currents. The system is still undergoing development and is expected to be installed in ORPC’s next phase of operations. If the company succeeds, the project will be implemented in Maine.
Through its operations, ORPC remains committed to protect marine life and environment. Part of its approach in environmental monitoring is the development of monitoring methods and technologies, and the regular modifications to these monitoring methods and technologies to implement only the best practices in environmental protection.
