NCR Corporation was formerly known as the National Cash Register. As the name suggests, the business is the source of the first mechanical cash register. The product was invented by James Ritty in 1879 and the patent of the product was purchased by John Henry Patterson and Frank Jefferson Patterson, the founders of the company. Today, the main products of the business include automated teller machines, check processing systems, point-of-sale terminal, self-service kiosks, business consumables and barcode scanners. In addition, they also have IT maintenance support services, which generate more than half of the company’s annualized revenue.
The business is headquartered in Dayton, Ohio and was once a division of AT&T after the company acquired the business in 1884. The business has become an independent venture in 1997 and now trades publicly on the New York Stock Exchange.
