Brother started as Yasui Sewing Machine Company in Nagoya, Japan in 1908. The US market was entered by the Company in 1954 through Brother International Company, its first overseas office. The European market was entered in 1958 with the sales affiliate in Dublin. The UK market opened in 1968 when Brother acquired Jones Sewing Machine Company.
In 1962, the company name was changed to Brother Industries Ltd. At that time, brother started selling printers as a result of its partnership with Centronics.
A huge proportion of Brother’s revenues are contributed by the sewing machine business. Brother Sewing Machines Europe GmbH is the fourth largest company in the group with a turnover in excess of €80 million. A sewing machines factory was opened in Vietnam in 2012 to produce and sell sewing machines in Taiwan and China.
