Founded by G. Kofi Annan, a designer and a native of Accra, Ghana, Annansi Clothing took its name from the West African folk tale of Anansi. Annan began creating shirts in 2003 that combined African and American themes, selling them on the streets of New York City. The shirts proved to be highly popular, garnering recognition from the fashion industry and participating in high-profile fashion events. One of Annansi Clothing's initiatives in social consciousness is its Demand Details Program which aims to stop the dealership of blood diamonds from war-torn African countries such as Sierra Leone. Annansi Clothing has collaborated with several musicians and filmmakers towards this end, and continues to actively campaign for the cause in its business enterprise.
Not too many retail companies make the extra effort to be socially conscious right from the get-go. A lot of the bigger fashion names may give to charities or establish their own foundations, but rare are the small clothing lines that actually seek to address pressing social issues. This is what Annansi Clothing Co. does: it uses its visibility to encourage people to act.
