The business is in the treatment of timber against rot from moisture using creosote which is derived from coal tar. It was the success of this business that the creation of Dominion Tar and Chemical Company, Limited was made on February 4, 1903. Through several acquisitions and various mergers, the business was able to venture into other businesses like the production of papers. It was in 1965 that the business changed its name to Domtar Ltd and by then the business was already operating various segments including Construction Materials, Consumer Products, Chemicals, Newsprint and Containerboard, Packaging and Kraft and Fine Papers.
